  1. Many e-scooters and e-bikes to be “treated just like bikes” under new Irish law

Comments Off on Many e-scooters and e-bikes to be “treated just like bikes” under new Irish law

    Source: Newstalk

New Irish road safety legislation will categorise e-scooters and e-bikes similarly to traditional manual bikes, according to Irish transport consultant Conor Faughnan.

The Road Traffic and Roads Act 2023 was signed into law in June 2023, and has given the green light for regulations to govern e-scooters for the first time. Although the comprehensive regulations are not yet available, Faughnan told The Pat Kenny Show that this legislation will treat most electric bikes and e-scooters the same as regular pedal bikes.

In the primary legislation, we know the maximum speed [for e-scooters] is going to be 25 kilometres per hour. The new law says an e-bike is grand – if it’s a light vehicle, if it’s 25km/h, then for all legal purposes, it’s a bike. Whenever you see in the law “bicycle” think “e-bike” – they have the same rules,” explained Faughnan.

E-bikes typically have average speeds ranging from 20 to 25 kilometres per hour, whereas e-scooters have an average speed between 25 to 48 kilometres per hour. According to Faughnan, this new legislation around the speed and power of electric scooters and bikes follows a trend in most European countries.

Faughnan emphasized that integrating legislation for e-bikes and e-scooters with regular bicycles will contribute to the safe operation of these electric vehicles, and people shouldn’t be intimidated by their seemingly faster speeds.

If you just forget the engineer or the motor for the moment, [fast cyclists] exist already, imagine the guys zipping down the hills in their spandex, cycling at very fast speeds. In town, a lot of new cycle tracks… they have plastic bollards, and the cyclists are single-file. That’s quite frustrating if you’re on a big bike and you’ve got a lot of steam or you’re trying to get into town, and there’s a slow-moving mum with kids on a ‘trike’. It’s no different really whether the bike is e-powered. The simple rule of thumb is ‘it’s a bike’, until it gets too big and then it’s a moped.

Since 1994, the Flemish Government has been conducting research into the travel behaviour of Flemish people. This research is called the Research on Travel Behaviour, or OVG. In this study, a number of mobility characteristics of families and persons are studied, such as: characteristics of the person who moves, when, why, from where, to where, with what, for how long and how far someone moves. In the meantime, we are in the 6th edition.

Results were shared in an article entitled ‘How do we move post-corona?‘, with detailed information broken down by sector. The data indicated positive trends for LEVs both in levels of e-bike ownership and in their modal share of journeys.

Vehicle and driving licence ownership: more than 1 in 3 families own an e-bike

Source: Institute for Mobility, June 2023

77% of Flemish families have at least one bicycle, a number that is in line with previous studies. The number of Flemish families who own an electric bicycle is rising sharply. 35% of Flemish families also have an electric bicycle. For comparison: pre-corona (2019) this was only 20%.

A Flemish family has an average of 2.13 bicycles (of which 1.61 regular bicycles and 0.49 electric bicycles). That figure remains stable over the years. 77.3% of families have at least one bicycle (including electric bicycles).

The number of families with an electric bicycle continues to increase sharply: in OVG 5.2 this was still 10.89%, in OVG 5.3 16.93%, in OVG 5.4 17.78% and in OVG 5.5 more than 1 in 5 families (20.13%) has at least 1 electric bicycle. In OVG6, e-bike ownership is making another big leap: 35% of families will have an electric bicycle by 2022. Booming business.

Much more often by electric bicycle (modal split)

Source: Institute for Mobility, June 2023

Flemish people cycle and walk more and more: 18.1% of journeys are made by bicycle and 17.3% on foot. The electric bicycle is on the rise: 5.3% of trips are with the electric bicycle and 0.3% with the speed pedelec.

Based on OVG6, the Flemish government’s goal of making at least 40% of all journeys in a sustainable way has already been achieved.

  3. California’s unique Super73 off-roaders

    Source: Clean Rider, S. Benhammouda

The Super73 electric collection continues to expand with the announcement of the Adventure Series, featuring three new, innovative off-road models.

The e-bike manufacturer boasts a style that is somewhat unique to others in the sector and has announced exploration into the off-road division. Super73 have launched the new range based upon their three bike categories, namely the R-Series, S-Series and Z-Series. The new designs feature different components and working parts, including GRZLY tires on 20-inch wheels that sets them apart from other brands.

Range is an all-important topic, and has been one of the stumbling blocks for the sector. However, Super73 have addressed this. The Z Adventure Series can reach between 56 and 80 km on a single charge of the 615 Wh battery, dependent upon the rider’s use, of course. Equipped with a 750W rear motor, the entry-level model offers speeds of 45 km/h along the flat and 32km/h in a climb.

Next on the Super 73 agenda is the S Adventure Series with its larger 960 Wh battery. Although weighing an extra 3kg, the range is significantly increased to 120km. The choice R Adventure Series matches the dynamics of the S, and also comes with an adjustable suspension system to cater for alternative off-road terrains.

Z prices start at €3,599, increasing to €4,399 for the S Adventure Series and €5,399 for the top-of-the-range R model.

It is important to note that due to the performance and power statistics of the Super73 e-bikes, registration, insurance and helmet safety propels the series to adhere to speed-pedelec e-bike regulations, leaving being the more subdued e-bike regulations.

  4. Parking space solutions for Amersfoort’s shared bicycle and scooter scheme

Sixteen designated parking spaces have been set aside in the centre of Amersfoort in a quest to resolve the annoyance of irresponsibly parked electric scooters, shared by the city community. Similarly built hubs are also due for development in nearby local areas.

Residents have begun to protest against the often-abandoned vehicles, which have become hazardous for dwellers. A recent evaluation of the shared mobility scheme found that between January and August of 2022, bad parking accounted for over half of complaints. It’s believed that introducing designated parking areas will not only make the area safer, but will also make it easier to find one of the shared vehicles.

300 shared bicycles and 300 shared scooters are currently available for use by Amersfoort’s 150,000 inhabitants, although these numbers have reduced from 12,000 in mid-2022, due to two of five providers withdrawing from the sustainable transport scheme. However, the evaluation report concluded that half of the users have left their car at home in favour of the scooters, with the largest demographic under the age of 29. The main motives for the popularity were saving time, not needing to own a scooter or bike, and to have fun. From the reports, scooters have proved more favourable than the shared bicycles.

The evaluation was based upon Amersfoort residents’ survey answers, data from the providers, reports to local government and results from a survey of MBO students.

  7. T-Mobile and Townmaking run e-bike ISA trials in Amsterdam

Comments Off on T-Mobile and Townmaking run e-bike ISA trials in Amsterdam

    Source: Fietsberaad.nl

Intelligent Speed Adaptation (ISA) would review and adjust the speed of e-bikes and speed-pedelecs in line with local limits

The concept of Intelligent Speed Adaption (ISA) is not new, having been tested in cars for many years – however, thus far it has seen little real-world application. In Amsterdam, T-Mobile and Townmaking are now running experiments for the technology in regard to two-wheelers; routes such as that between Amsterdam and Schiphol are being monitored for potential application.

How could this work? Speed could be reduced through geofencing, that is, if a bicycle enters a certain area or approaches a certain location, the speed is automatically reduced. Such technology is already used in some rental e-scooter fleets such as Voi in the UK, where ‘slow speed zones’ automatically reduce a vehicle’s maximum speed.

In the latest experimentation by T-Mobile, an app was tested that turns the screen of the rider’s smartphone red when entering an area with a speed limit. To prevent too much distraction, other warning methods are also being considered, such as a vibration signal via the handlebar. Technology would eventually be made available to bicycle manufacturers and road authorities to implement their own preventative measures.

A crucial element for the success of the new technology is the speed with which the system reacts and modulates the bicycle to a safer speed. This so-called latency (deceleration factor) can make the difference in whether or not a cyclist brakes in time in an unsafe situation. Thanks to modern 4G and 5G networks, T-Mobile says very low latency connectivity can be achieved in 10 milliseconds or less.

  8. The all-new Solace eRIDE from SCOTT

Comments Off on The all-new Solace eRIDE from SCOTT

LEVA-EU member SCOTT introduces its new standard in electric road and gravel bikes: the Solace eRIDE. Quiet, efficient and with a near-zero drag motor, the Solace is a highly versatile do-it-all endurance bike.

The Solace eRIDE is both a Road and Gravel platform, two bikes in one. With a clean do-it-all design, generous tire clearance and carbon frame, the Solace is a lightweight e-bike package with an excellent range. Longer rides are encouraged with room for both 1 water bottle + range extender or 2 water bottles and suitable bike frame bags.
Both bikes share the same frame, with the essential differences coming down to spec.
They share the heritage of the SCOTT Addict Gravel frameset, a bike that is already a class leader in the lightweight gravel sector.

    Frame Construction
Despite having an open bottom bracket for placement of the drive unit, we have reached very similar stiffness values compared to the Addict gravel. Having such a compact system like the one that TQ has developed played a key role when building the mounting points where the motor and the battery are assembled in the frame. Compact and minimalistic mountings, help to keep a smooth carbon construction in the frame structure, avoiding bulky or complicated interfaces.

    Drive Unit
Thanks to the silent TQ motor, the Solace eRIDE enables you to hear the sound of nature without distractions. The bike’s light weight means it can easily be used without any assistance, an added benefit being the motor has almost no drag allowing you to use the battery only when needed for an excellent range. For a road or gravel e-bike platform this is very important. For systems with drag, riding above the legally imposed thresholds can be limiting. No such issue with the TQ system.

    Compact Powerful Assistance
TQ is a German company founded in 1994 that specializes in electric components across a range of industries including aerospace, medical and infrastructure. With the HPR50, they simply rewrote the rules, delivering an unprecedented weight/torque ratio of 1.8 kg for 50Nm. With a diameter of 8 cm, TQ has innovated by using a harmonic gear system. This allows for a reduction of size, while also increasing the accuracy of the system. This results in a lighter bike and better integration while reducing drag for a more natural pedaling sensation. This technology also allows for the reduction in system noise for a truly natural experience.

    Always Connected
To maintain a clean cockpit, the TQ system puts the accent on device connectivity and a minimalistic display located in the top tube. At a glance, the LED display provides all the essential info like the battery level in %, the range in Km and the mode. Thanks to an integrated power meter the RPM, and watts are also provided. Additionally, The TQ app offers real benefits and is easy to use. It is easy to connect, customize and control your TQ-powered e-bike with the TQ e-bike app. The bike comes with a suggested SCOTT motor tune, but with the app, you can tune your drive unit to either save battery life or maximize the power output.

    2 Batteries – 1 Internal, 1 External
In addition to the 360Wh battery integrated into the downtube, all Solace models are prepared to use an additional 160Wh range extender. The Solace’s range extender comes as an accessory and looks like a simple water bottle. Utilizing a SCOTT-specific quick-release system, the range extender is easy to swap in for a bottle cage tool free.
Thanks to TQ’s expertise and unique cell efficiency, battery capacity is optimized to the fullest. The e-bike’s system automatically adapts to having two power sources with SMART technology.
This means that, when using the range extender, the system will prioritize its drainage before calling on the use of the Solace’s integrated battery. Plus, when the range extender is emptied the transition between power sources is automatic and seamless. You won’t even notice it.
The complete system can be charged in one go too. With the range extender in place, just plug the smart charger into its port. As before, the SMART system will prioritize the e-bike’s internal battery charge first, then top up the range extender, so you’ll never be caught short when heading out to ride. The charge time is fast, the main battery can reach 80% in just two hours of charging.

    Integrated cables
The Syncros Creston IC combo handlebar allows complete internal cable routing for mechanical or electronic cables and disc brakes. With this intelligent construction, it has never been as easy to adjust the position with spacers.

    Accessories & Compatibility
Fender kits are available for both Solace Road and Gravel from Syncros.
The Solace eRIDE is also light-ready and compatible with a range of Syncros products so you can stay visible any hour of the day. Using the smart box in the top tube it is possible to directly connect compatible light systems to the main battery.
Solace Road and Gravel are compatible with a dedicated kickstand from Syncros.
The Creston cockpit will fit any of the standard Syncros mounts.

    Product Range
The Solace eRIDE will be available as Road and Gravel options. All models feature a carbon HMX frame. The collection will total 6 models including 1 dedicated Contessa women-specific model. Discover the full collection at Scott-sports.com.
