Despite the lingering challenges from previous difficult years, the bicycle industry remains optimistic about the future. While there may not be an explosion of innovations, the steady advancement and enhancement of bicycle technology is evident. For those who take a closer look rather than getting caught up in excitement, many promising innovations and trends can be discovered at the Eurobike trade fair from 3 to 7 July, 2024, in Frankfurt.

    MTBs get lighter

The ongoing trend of lighter bikes continues: Bulls introduces an EMTB weighing just 18 kilograms. The Sonic Evo AM SX is a carbon full-suspension bike with SRAM AXS shifting and a Bosch SX motor. Its counterpart, the Sonic Evo SX Dakar, is designed as a sporty everyday version, featuring a hardtail frame, mudguards, and a rack.

The KTM Scarp Exonic, lacking a motor, caters to powerful athletes. This race-ready carbon full-suspension bike weighs just over 10 kilograms without pedals.

    Allroad-compatible SUV bikes

Many pedelecs struggle off paved roads, making SUV e-bikes with wider tires and sturdier frames popular. Kalkhoff has developed a full suspension frame for the new Entice 7+, creating a comfortable, sporty SUV bike with a permissible total weight of 170 kilograms.

    Gravel bikes diversify

Gravel bikes have become significant sellers, especially among younger riders who appreciate their versatility. Gravel bikes are evolving into two main types: fast race bikes with narrower tires for all-road use and robust bikepacking bikes for touring. Differing mainly in tire volume, frames, and forks, these bikes are showcased at the DT Swiss booth with a colorful Ridley gravel racer and a bikepacker, both featuring new GRC carbon wheels.

Accessory trends reflect these bikes’ versatility, such as the SKS Infinity Universal rack system, easily attached and detached from sports bikes without frame threads.

    Road bike appeal

High-end road bikes are becoming prestige items, benefiting from gravel bike influences. Wider tires and rims enhance comfort, grip, and stability, allowing these bikes to handle dirt roads. Improved integration of lightweight design, stiffness, and aerodynamics is seen in bikes like the new Liv Langma, designed for female racers. Manufacturers like Zipp and DT Swiss also focus on optimized aerodynamics with harmonized wheel-tire systems.

Efforts to lower prices to around 1500 euros aim to attract newcomers and young riders to the sport.

    Compact and off-road cargo bikes

Cargo bikes continue to gain interest, but their size can be unwieldy. Manufacturers are now creating more compact models, like Riese & Müller’s new Carrie, which are lighter, more agile, and easier to handle. These bikes are designed to transport children or loads more efficiently and fit better in urban environments.

Additionally, there is a growing niche for off-road transport needs. CaGo’s off-road version of the CS series and Tern’s all-terrain adventure cargo bike Orox, with its strong Bosch motor and dual-battery system, exemplify this trend.

    Electric shifting

Electronics are increasingly integrated into sporty derailleurs. Shimano’s electric GRX Gravel Group uses Di2 technology, offering a 2×11 speed range. Pinion’s MGU motor gearbox unit, including the new Auto.Shift variant, automatically changes gears based on riding data, with manual override available. This technology is featured in Gudereit’s new e-trekking bikes ET 13.6 and 13.8.

    Motor evolution

E-support is now standard, with more than half of all bikes sold in 2023 being pedelecs. Innovations focus on lighter weight, more efficient batteries, and refined control systems. Fazua enhances its Light Assist drive, and Mahle’s new X20 lightweight hub motor offers discreet power development. ZF introduces a compact full-assist drive, the “Bike Eco System.”

    Digitalisation and connectivity

Bicycles are becoming more digital, integrating software for individualized functions, data collection, theft protection, and navigation. Bosch emphasizes further connectivity for e-bikes, aiming to make them “intelligent companions.” SRAM’s Red AXS groupset integrates gearshift settings, power measurement, and route planning, creating a connected system with internet resources.

Busch & Müller’s Briq-XL Premium headlamp offers improved light control with digital cornering light, and the B&M Turntec is a new turn signal system already featured on bikes from Scott and Velo de Ville.

    Inclusive cycling

The Hase Trigo Up E and HP Velotechnik Delta TX are modern tricycles with e-support, designed for people with disabilities. These bikes feature small wheels, low step-through frames, and mid-mounted motors from Shimano or Bafang, making cycling more accessible and stable, with ample space for luggage.

  3. Eurobike’s Ecomobility Experience Gallery 2024: “Fine mobility” commercial vehicles

Comments Off on Eurobike’s Ecomobility Experience Gallery 2024: “Fine mobility” commercial vehicles

    Source: Eurobike

For tradespeople needing more than a cargo bike, numerous alternatives exist before resorting to a van. Increasingly, companies are adding small electric vehicles to their fleets, particularly in building services, landscaping, gardening, and local municipalities.

Media coverage has highlighted this trend extensively. For instance, two years ago, Markus Remy, a chimney sweep in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse, Germany, began using an e-cargo bike for his rounds, a story which gained attention in local and national news. A year earlier, Walter Babel, a chimney sweep from Borchen near Paderborn, incorporated two e-cargo bikes into his operations, viewing them as logical investments for employee health and environmental protection. A further chimney sweep, Andreas Raschke from Gilching made headlines in 2019 for using his cargo bike and trailer in all weather conditions, including snow. Similarly, Christian Borgen, a gas, water, and heating engineer from Niederrad near Frankfurt, travels to clients by bike, transporting tools and materials in a trailer. These examples are just a few among many.

    Versatile mobility solutions are rising

Companies seek to avoid common issues associated with larger commercial vehicles, such as traffic congestion, parking difficulties, and manoeuvrability challenges in narrow streets or courtyards.

Exploring the market reveals a variety of what Eurobike has named “fine mobility” solutions, from electric trolleys and hand trucks to traditional bikes for tradespeople, e-cargo bikes, trailers for motorized scooters, and electric mini trucks. This trend represents a growing interest in the “world of wheels between shoes and cars,” or more aptly, “the world of wheels between boots and vans.”

    Eurobike and Ecomobility

At past editions of Eurobike, a leading platform for the bike industry, the Cargo Bike Academy and Cargo Bike Area have highlighted the advances and versatility of cargo bikes. This year, Eurobike introduces the Ecomobility Experience Gallery in Hall 8, showcasing a wide selection of fine mobility commercial vehicles. This exhibition aims to provide hands-on experiences with these innovative transport solutions.

    Examples of fine mobility solutions

    • The ARI 458 Tipper is a light electric transporter capable of carrying 531 to 648 kilograms of cargo and up to 2.05 square meters of load, making it ideal for various trades, construction sites, or landscaping.
    • The AIXAM Pro e-Truck is a small tipper transporter with a range of 150 kilometres, a two-square-meter cargo area, and a load capacity of 327 kilograms, suitable for multiple applications.
    • The Goupil G2 offers an eco-friendly, quiet solution perfect for tourist sites, hotels, parks, and public areas, available in different configurations including a rubbish tipper.
    • GECO Heavy Truck XP, a three-wheeled flatbed pickup, has a loading area of 1.27 square meters and a 500-kilogram capacity, ideal for areas with restricted access.
    • The BAYK VeloBRING is a high-power pedelec cargo bike with a robust construction and a 318-kilogram carrying capacity, providing a versatile, non-fully electric option.
    • Metrucks Doer minitruck, developed on a pedelec platform, can carry up to 200 kilograms and is eagerly anticipated in the market.

    Cargo bikes

Additionally, cargo bikes like the Chike e-cargo bike and the Nanuk Megaliner demonstrate the wide range of options available. The Chike e-cargo bike is narrow and manoeuvrable, carrying up to 80 kilograms, while the Nanuk Megaliner can handle up to half a tonne, suitable for transporting carpentry materials.

    Hand-pulled transport solutions

Eurokraft’s hand platform trucks with a one-tonne load capacity and Zallys’ TR 30 motorized trolley, which can carry up to 300 kilograms with electric assistance, further exemplify the fine mobility segment’s diversity.

Importance to small and medium sized businesses

Fine mobility solutions are particularly relevant for small and medium-sized businesses. In Germany alone, there are approximately 570,000 craft-related businesses, nearly 20,000 garden and landscaping companies, and 60,000 contract cleaning businesses with 700,000 employees. If these companies adopt finer transport solutions, they will significantly contribute to the shift towards sustainable transport.

Eurobike’s latest visionary shines a new light on the latest in bicycle and urban mobility ranges

Eurobike, a leading global trade event for the bicycle and future mobility sector has revealed a new visual look. Its main motif represents Eurobike’s desire to represent all bicycle and urban mobility ranges.

From July 3 to 7, 2024, Messe Frankfurt will once again become a major stage for the latest trends, a knowledge platform as well as a networking forum for new mobility, with the bicycle remaining as its strongest driving factor. The agency Baschnegger Ammann Partner recently completed this designed poster for Eurobike.

The new visual design’s essence is based on the simple and innovative basic principle of the bicycle and its modern “relatives” – the wheel, reducing the (bicycle) wheel to its underlying circular shape. For this design, Eurobike claims the combination of different circular parts and a signal-like color palette covers all segments of the bicycle world and future mobility.

Eurobike deems the new visual as “inspirationally colorful, self-confidently striking and pleasantly cheerful”. It builds on its well-known magenta and yellow brand colors for Eurobike, and adds a new color to the mix, cyan. It introduces this new color as a way to create more room to visually represent industry frontline topics, and for Eurobike to evolve as its own brand. The fair platform also confirms that this imagery can be used in all formats and displayed across all channels.

Andreas Kleinekathöfer, Creative Director and Partner at Baschnegger Ammann Partner explains the creative aspiration behind the visual, “Our aim was to develop a new key visual for Eurobike that was as visionary as it was coherent and derived from its DNA,”. Eurobike project manager Dirk Heidrich added: “The new visualization of our umbrella brand reflects all segments of our industry and their further development. It conveys the intention of the Eurobike platform to create an effective space for all key players to meet the environmental, economic and social challenges of mobility.”
