The LEVA-EU member is ready for China’s newly implemented E-Bike Safety Standard with their new compliant battery.

On December 1, 2025, China officially banned the sale of all e-bikes built to the older national standard, implementing the updated mandatory Safety Technical Specifications for Electric Bicycles. Any e-bike sold in China must now carry a valid China Compulsory Certificate (CCC) under this brand-new standard – older certificates are invalid.

These new rules go far beyond what most countries require. They tighten fire-resistance requirements, restrict plastic components to 5.5% of total weight, cap vehicle weight, and mandate improved electrical safety. Enhanced anti-tampering technologies for battery packs, controllers, and speed limiters curb illegal modifications at the source.

Working hand-in-hand with GB 43854-2024 – one of the world’s toughest lithium-ion battery standards (in place since October 2024 in China) – the regulations require mandatory over-charge protection, thermal abuse tests, puncture tests, and ban repurposed or second-hand cells, which have been a major cause of past fires. Greenway’s new 4828 lithium battery offers lightweight compliance, all-weather performance and maximum safety.

Lightweight compliance: Aerospace-grade magnesium alloy housing weighs just 9.6kg, helping meet strict weight requirements while enhancing fire resistance. Double-handle design enables flexible battery positioning.

All-weather performance: Charges at -10℃, discharges at -20℃, with 70km+ range for daily commuting and 5+ year lifespan that reduces total cost of ownership.

Maximum safety: GB 43854-2024 certified, passing nail puncture, drop, and water immersion tests. Greenway’s smart BMS continuously monitors battery parameters and protects against misuse and safety issues.

Overall, Greenway’s 4828 battery delivers on both the compliance and performance that e-mobility in China demands.

The Indonesian facility of LEVA-EU member Greenway Battery has received Certificate of Origin (COO) certification in December 2025, representing the establishment of a fully compliant production base for e-bike and LEV batteries outside of China. This certification allows them to serve global markets with reduced trade barriers and greater supply chain resilience.

Greenway has charted the trajectory of the Indonesian factory, from Q4 in 2024 seeing its first locally-produced e-bike batteries exported to European customers, to now achieving the COO certification, unlocking the capability for compliant mass shipment, with immediate availability.

    Greenway’s strengths

The company has highlighted its strategic advantages across three key markets:

    • European Union: non-China manufacturing addressing trade considerations; full EU regulatory compliance; optimized maritime shipping routes from Southeast Asia
    • North America: COO-compliant production positioned for preferential trade benefits; meeting supply chain diversification requirements; addressing non-China sourcing mandates
    • ASEAN Region: local production with AFTA trade benefits; reduced logistics costs and faster delivery; direct access to Southeast Asia’s rapidly growing e-mobility markets (Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore)

    Benefits of COO certification

    • COO certification represents manufacturing capability at the Greenway Indonesia facility, with full production and quality control systems to meet the requirements of various relevant industry standards.
    • Localization development – Greenway’s products have met specified Regional Value Content (RVC) requirements, demonstrating integration with Indonesia’s industrial ecosystem.
    • A key breakthrough in market access – a compliant legal foundation for expansion into the North American market and accessing relevant preferential tariff benefits.
    • Reinforces supply chain resilience, with a stable and sustainable local supply chain which reduces dependency on single-source manufacturing.

At Eurobike 2025, the LEVA EU member recently presented two prototype Battery Passport solutions designed to meet the European Union’s upcoming Battery Regulation (EN 2023/1542) requirements, which will become mandatory in 2027. It has developed a streamlined digital passport for regulatory compliance and an IoT passport in partnership with OKGO.

At Eurobike, the company premiered its dual-path approach, offering flexibility for light electric vehicle brands seeking either straightforward compliance or deeper system integration

The first option – the Greenway Compliance Passport – is a streamlined, standalone digital passport designed to ensure core regulatory compliance. It targets manufacturers seeking a simple, reliable pathway to meet the 2027 milestones without additional system complexity.

The second option – the IoT-Integrated Passport – has been developed in partnership with IoT service provider OKGO. This fully integrated solution embeds Greenway battery data into a broader connected platform, incorporating firmware management, analytics, aftersales support, and rider-focused services.

Greenway says the two-tier offering allows customers to choose between rapid adoption for regulatory readiness or advanced integration for enhanced product intelligence and lifecycle management. Both approaches are designed to meet the EU’s transparency and traceability requirements for battery manufacturing, usage, and recycling.

By introducing these solutions, Greenway looks set to position itself as an early mover in battery compliance innovation for the light electric mobility sector by offering future-ready options to manufacturers ahead of the EU’s regulatory deadline.

    Source: Show Daily

As a battery innovator of lithium-ion energy solutions for nearly two decades, the LEVA EU member expands on its commitment to long-term performance and sustainability as being central to its business strategy.

Founded in 2006 in Shenzhen, China, the company has grown into a major global supplier of batteries for e-bikes, e-motorcycles, electric scooters, and industrial applications. Today, Greenway produces 6.5 GWh of battery packs and cells annually, employs over 2,300 people, and reports €287 million in annual revenue.

Mo-Hua Yang, General Manager of Greenway Battery Europe, told Show Daily about the company’s distinct focus: “The battery market is largely dominated by automotive players, but our focus has always been on micromobility and consumer products.”

    Micromobility at the core

While many competitors prioritize large-scale automotive solutions, Greenway has maintained a strategic emphasis on smaller-format batteries. Battery systems typically used in e-bikes, dirt bikes, scooters, and light industrial vehicles—generally below 10 kWh—make up the bulk of its output. Currently, micromobility accounts for 39% of Greenway’s revenue, followed by 30% from consumer electronics and 22% from energy storage systems.

    Enhancing safety through advanced engineering

At Taipei Cycle 2025, Greenway showcased several safety-certified battery technologies, including models approved under EN50604-1 and UL2271 standards. Among its key innovations is the adoption of wire-bonding technology (replacing traditional spot welding), which has been licensed from LG and also used by Tesla. “This cell connection technology enhances heat distribution, safety, structural integrity, manufacturing efficiency and overall product quality,” notes Yang.

“Consumers want more capacity, but safety must evolve accordingly,” Yang said, underscoring the growing expectations in the e-mobility market.

    Smart sustainability in battery design

Greenway is also advancing digital tools to improve battery longevity and support sustainability goals. The company is developing a data-driven platform that will help users and manufacturers monitor battery health in real time—aligned with upcoming Battery Regulation data requirements.

“The Battery Passport is a great opportunity for the industry,” Yang noted. “Real-time data will provide valuable insights into battery condition, helping to improve longevity, reuse and repurposing.”

In addition to software, Greenway is testing hardware solutions such as single-cell replacement with non-welded designs, which is currently undergoing long-term testing. The company also participates in European recycling initiatives like Bebat. “Sustainability should be part of battery design, not an afterthought,” Yang emphasized.

    European expansion underway

To meet rising demand, Greenway opened its first production facility in Indonesia in 2024. The company is now preparing for European manufacturing, partnering with a local firm to accelerate its entry, offering faster delivery, and lowering its cost and carbon footprint, with production being expected to begin in 2026.

“Europe is a key market for us, and this new facility marks a major step forward,” Yang concluded.
