  1. Future mobility movers: Eurobike 2022 shows how cities will be mobile in future

Eurobike 2022 is reporting a record number of registrations.

Expanding the concept and explicitly integrating the topics Future Mobility and Urban Mobility in all their facets is perfectly complementing classic bike topics. Working hand in hand with competence clusters from politics, administration, and business, as well as experts from research and practice, Eurobike is actively advancing the transformation of transport from the viewpoint of stakeholders in the bicycle industry. Two established Eurobike features, namely the Start-Up Area and Cargo Area, are moving into Hall 8 – the new flagship for alternative mobility solutions on the exhibition grounds.

The green transformation in transport policy is gathering pace. Even though it currently remains to be seen what priority the new Federal government will assign to the issue of transforming mobility, development – above all in urban areas – is already overtaking what is commonly being discussed as forward planning. Through bicycles, e-bikes and electrically assisted small vehicles such as e-scooters and sharing services, the transition to micromobility is already taking place, while the space required and CO2 footprint per user are falling. The new Eurobike is both a driving force and a catalyst in this development; it is showcasing new products and innovations while also offering mobility stakeholders a platform, networks, concepts, and contents extending beyond the bicycle and e-bike. The nucleus and epicenter of Future Mobility will be Hall 8 on the Frankfurt Messe exhibition grounds with a connection to the Demo Area.

In order to extend the concept towards urban mobility, the organizers of Eurobike have augmented the team with powerful reinforcement from a range of different disciplines. MotionLab.Berlin with its founder and leading light Christoph Neye, who sees support for Eurobike as a logical consequence of his commitment to new mobility: “As co-initiator of MotionLab.Berlin, I have been able to experience the potential for new mobility every single day. The bike segment, in particular, which is being increasingly supplemented by light electric vehicles (LEVs) in urban applications, is witnessing the emergence of new technologies and services capable of changing our mobility for the better in the long term. It is therefore also a matter of personal concern for me to support and advise Eurobike as it pursues this path. And, as a proponent and supporter of the hard-tech start-up scene, I am delighted by this opportunity to introduce exciting and unique innovations to a large public at the leading trade fair for future mobility.”

Cargo bikes – guaranteeing the switch to greener transport

Future mobility is inconceivable without cargo bikes. Only if we succeed in moving cargo over short distances in a safe and environmentally aware manner will we manage to transform transport policy. The cargo bike will also be finding a new home in Hall 8 “Mobility of the Future”. Eurobike Show Director Dirk Heidrich explains: “Since 2018, the Cargo Area has been a meeting point for the dynamic cargo bike sector. Through the choice of Frankfurt, we will be offering the product a fitting territory, a real laboratory, the right setting, and a connection to the subject matter.” Community events such as evening cargo bike excursions both with and into the local cargo bike scene will be just as much a part of the program as cargo bike races on the Festival weekend (16 and 17 July). The all-inclusive stand offers as well as direct access to the Demo Area with ideal opportunities for testing as well as proximity to the topic areas of Start-Ups, Urban Mobility, Sharing as a Service, Infrastructure and the like all combine to produce a nicely rounded package.

The Eurobike organizers are now extending their cooperation with the Berlin-based think-and-do tank cargobike.jetzt, which acts as a supporter and driving force in this field. “Eurobike is the place to be for the cargo bike sector,” says Arne Behrensen, founder of the undertaking. “Frankfurt Messe is a top international address. And in the streets of the city, the cargo bike revolution is in fact already in full swing.” Cargo bike-sharing is set to play a tremendous role in the future as well. For many city-dwellers, this now represents the first option to really live without a car. After all, the easier it becomes to borrow a cargo bike for specific needs, the more matter-of-fact it will become to manage without a car.

It is quite clear that the changing mobility needs new traffic infrastructure. Rapid cycle paths are under construction – direct, flat, junction-free routes for bikes and pedelecs that link A to B and then lead on to C and D. They too are a major step towards alternative (bike) commuting. Eurobike will be highlighting the development and projects also in conjunction with exhibitors from the field of infrastructure and planning. An atmosphere of change prevails in all areas of the new mobility,” says Show Director Dirk Heidrich. “And we are already looking forward to reproducing precisely this atmosphere.”

The 30th edition of Eurobike runs from Wednesday 13 July, to Sunday 17 July 2022, from 09:00 to 18:00 each day, and is open to the general public on Saturday and Sunday.

  2. Bye, Bye Eurobike

Comments Off on Bye, Bye Eurobike

The doors of Eurobike in Friedrichshafen are now definitely closed. Just under 30 years of moaning about traffic jams to and from the fair, shortage of accommodation, overloaded Wi-Fi, too many sports bikes, too little sustainable mobility, a fair that for many participating parents coincided with the first day of school, … This year, every evening after the fair not hindered by any traffic jams, we drove to our terrace on the banks of the lake. As the sun set in an unparalleled panorama of mountains and water, we mused on our long history with Friedrichshafen and how, after all, we would miss it.

At the show, we haven’t met many people who really thought the move to Frankfurt was a great idea. And no-one, including us, was happy about the new date.

The main question, however, is what the Frankfurter Eurobike exhibition concept will look like. One major minus of Eurobike has always been the fact that the fair lagged too much behind the facts. Unfortunately, they continued to do so this year under the slogan “we have bikes, not cars”. A clear sneer at IAA Mobility, the fair in Munich, which is adding a significant chunk of light, electric mobility to its core concept this week.

If Eurobike continues to cling to its “pure-bike concept” next year, there’s a good chance it will lose. There are too many light electric vehicle companies looking for a suitable and contemporary annual network platform. Whoever embraces all forms of light, electric mobility will win.

As usual, LEVA-EU was present at Eurobike with a stand and information meetings. And that participation was a great success. Our agenda was fully booked with appointments with companies looking for further information about the LEV-market and a network that aligns with their activities. This week we will be visiting IAA Mobility to get a better understanding of what would be the best platform for us and our members. In the meantime, perhaps Eurobike should consider a name change for 2022, something that includes the term “Light Mobility” instead of “Bike”.

  3. Eurobike 2021 Schedule is Up and Running

Comments Off on Eurobike 2021 Schedule is Up and Running

Messe Friedrichshafen has announced its schedule for Eurobike 2021. After virtually all events were cancelled this year due to Corona, the organization has now a roadmap ready for the international cycle community in 2021.

The 29th edition of EUROBIKE will take place at Lake Constance as the main industry meeting point next year from Wednesday 1 to Saturday 4 September 2021.

“Covid-19 has turned the international bike industry and its events upside down this year. Despite the current imponderables and differing requirements from industry players regarding format, timing and target group, we are delighted to announce our plans for next year that include an even wider range of participation options. With our new EUROBIKE 2021 concept, we are making it possible to plan ahead with certainty and creating target group-specific, secure meeting points for an international audience,” says Klaus Wellmann, CEO Messe Friedrichshafen.

  4. Eurobike rescheduled to November 2020

The Corona pandemic continues to hold the world in a stranglehold. Given the ban in Germany on major events until 29 August 2020 and the scale of preparations and procedures for Eurobike, holding the show just two days later is practically impossible. Due to this, Messe Friedrichshafen has decided not to run Eurobike 2020 on the planned date from 2 to 5 September or in its usual format. Instead, the organisers are holding a one-off Eurobike Special show some two and a half months later – from 24 to 26 November 2020. The event will be a pure B2B concept and the ideal platform as a working trade fair with intensive expert and professional exchange. “We are providing the first, unique opportunity for the bike industry to meet in this challenging year to maintain retail contacts and help drive new impetus,” announces Klaus Wellmann, CEO Messe Friedrichshafen.

Initially proposed as a “Plan B” back in April, the new schedule is now being implemented. This year, the bicycle industry will be meeting in Friedrichshafen from Tuesday 24 to Thursday 26 November, with a pure B2B format. The working fair will run for three week days, without a public day and is scheduled for much later in the year in order to provide sufficient time for preparation and organisation. Given the current circumstances, it will take into account the interests of the industry, retail and the media, as the most important stakeholders in this business-focused show. Stefan Reisinger, Head of Eurobike explains: “Suppliers, brands and retailers are all starting the 2020 bike season facing very difficult conditions and will hopefully benefit from recovery effects over time. One thing is certain, all industry players will have to adapt to the postponed development of the season compared to previous years. The later Eurobike date gives the whole bike industry an opportunity to make plans at the end of the 2020 season for the coming sales and production season. As such, it also offers a unique chance to meet up, to exchange ideas, and to work and network this year.”

The concept for this year’s Eurobike working trade fair will not include popular events, such as the Public Day, Eurobike Party, Test and Demo Areas and other elements from the supporting programme. “It is not inconceivable that we will still all be following the social distancing regulations in November,” says Eurobike Project Manager, Dirk Heidrich. The shorter duration and lower concentration means that exhibitors will be offered cost benefits in the form of reduced booth prices and the Retail First ticketing programme will still be available. Regarding availability of and conditions for accommodation in Friedrichshafen and the surrounding area, the November date brings obvious advantages.

Meanwhile, the original planned Eurobike date at the start of September is going to be put to good use. The “Bike Biz Revolution – Conference for Visionaries” will be held on Tuesday, 1 September 2020. The Eurobike organisers are running the new, highly-acclaimed conference as planned – only in a digital format. This will offer international industry players a digital meeting point to meet and discuss on the usual show date. The organisers are also planning to extend the digital offer to include formats for the Eurobike Award, Eurobike Travel Talk and Start Up Day. 6. It was a very good Eurobike!

LEVA-EU looks back on a very successful Eurobike. At our booth, all meeting tables were used full time by LEVA-EU members meeting with customers and suppliers. We met with numerous LEV-companies wanting to learn more about what LEVA-EU has to offer them.

For the information meeting on EN 1594:2017 on Thursday, 63 participants registered. LEVA-EU Manager Annick Roetynck clarified the relationship between EN 15194 and legislation governing EPACs. For many attendants, it still came as a surprise to learn that EN 15194 is not a law, but merely a tool to comply with part of the legislation for EPACS. She further explained the difference between the old and the new EN 15194. She also provided all details on on the structure and the scope of the standard. She listed what makes an EPAC fully legal. She concluded with explanations on how the standardization process in Europe works, encouraging the companies present to get involved in the standardization work.

On Thursday evening, LEVA-EU and LEVA welcomed no less than 40 guests for the networking dinner in the Zeppelin Hangar restaurant. A very wide variety of companies were there: vehicle producers, assemblers, component and accessory manufacturers, designers, HR companies, etc. After a short introduction of each company during the aperitif, the guests could then decide which companies to sit with for further networking during dinner itself. It was a (sometimes literally) resounding success, and upon general request the dinner will be on again at Eurobike 2020.

Should you be interested in a copy of the presentation on EN 15194 and/or in the introductions of the companies that participated in the networking dinner, please contact Annick Roetynck, tel. +32 9 233 60 05, email annick@leva-eu.com

  8. Bafang introduces batteries

In addition to its various drive system options – front, rear and mid motors – LEVA-EU Member Bafang now extends its own battery portfolio to offer not only rack mounted and fully integrated inTube batteries, but also semi-integrated batteries for an even greater variety of frame designs

Bafang, one of the leading manufacturers of e-mobility components and complete drive systems, expands its battery collection for e-bikes with the introduction of two new models for down tube applications, BT F07.450.C and BT F08.600.C, offering 450Wh or 600Wh energy content respectively.

With these two new versions Bafang can now also offer an in-house solution for customers looking for downtube or other positions of a battery. Besides it is still possible to implement Bafang’s so-called “open system” which allows the combination of motors, controllers, sensors, displays and batteries from different (Bafang) series or even other suppliers. Due to their multitudinous development team of more than 40 engineers, Bafang can support its customers by securing perfect interaction between all those components.

But there are also good reasons for relying on just one supplier of a complete drive system – and therefore for Bafang to develop and introduce the new batteries. Both versions, complementing now a range of nine battery types and sizes, apply the same design and main technical features:

    • Premium battery cells (type 18650)
    • Semi-integration into the frame’s downtube
    • Demounting sideways (to the left)
    • Charging on/off the bike – with two charger options to choose from (2A/3A charging current)
    • Capacity indicators (LED) on top of the battery
    • Production colour: black with optional decals
Technical data BT F07.450.C BT F08.600.C
    Nominal voltage 43V 43V
    Nominal capacity 10.5Ah 14.0Ah
    Energy content 450Wh 600Wh
    Charging time (charge current) 5.5h (2A) 5h (3A)
    Dimension (L*W*H) 334*86*73mm 334*86*89mm
    Weight 3.0kg 4.0kg

INTUBE BATTERY BT F09 for M800 drive train system

The current 200Wh BT F05 will soon receive a larger cousin the 430Wh BT F09. High energy density, even greater mileage, long service life are all but good reasons to go for a bit more capacity. Aerodynamic low-profile design, with a mere 2.3kg still on the light side of things plus easy handling and (dis-)assembly. Perfect for Endurance eRoad or eGravel bikes, yet also for sleek flat handlebar Urban or Cross bikes.

The new batteries will be available for Bafang OE customers as of Q4 2019.

  9. Smaller, lighter, cheaper: new Pendix retrofit system

At Eurobike 2019, LEVA-EU Member Pendix presents the Pendix eDrive150, a new retrofit system that converts bicycles into e-bikes. The Pendix eDrive150start is smaller and lighter than the two other system versions eDrive300 and eDrive500. With only € 999 the eDrive150 is also very affordable and ideal for commuters that are looking for electric tailwind during their journey to work. Functions and design of the system have been streamlined and reduced to the absolute basics. At 1.4 kg, the battery is a real lightweight and only slightly larger than a standard half-liter beverage can.

The new battery is ideal for short distances or cyclists who only need punctual support. “Most commuters don’t run out of battery power in a day, so we decided to develop this smaller and much lighter version of the Pendix system and offer it as an alternative,” explains Thomas Herzog, co-founder and CEO of Pendix.

Commuters in Germany cycle an average of 9.2 kilometers to their job. The new battery has a range of about 28 kilometers. “Time pressure, looking for a parking space and traffic jams mean stress,” explains Thomas Herzog, “and we want to make the journey to work a little more relaxed. Many of our customers drive to work with electric support and use the return journey as a workout.”

Eurobike takes place in Friedrichshafen from 4 to 7 September 2019. Dealers and end customers will have the opportunity to test the Pendix eDrive150 for the first time.
