Innovative transportation researchers are invited to submit abstracts about their industry contributions for the upcoming TRA event which will take place in Budapest, Hungary.

The European Road Transport Research Advisory Council (ERTRAC) unites road transport stakeholders in building a common vision for the development of European transport research and invites researchers to participate in the Transport Research Arena (TRA), a flagship event created by the European Commission and various technology platforms, bringing together academics, practitioners, leading mobility experts and fresh research talent.

The next edition of the biennial conference will take place on May 18-21, 2026 and will also feature exciting demonstrations, innovative exhibitions, technical tours, award ceremonies and social events.

TRA conference topics and selection timeline

Preparation is underway to uncover significant contributions to Europe’s transportation sector, with the event presenting an opportunity for researchers to share their work based on the following topics: user centred mobility, green mobility and decarbonization, planning and operation, and transport digitalization.

    • Interested participants are invited to submit an abstract of 200 words by 15th June 2025 for the first round of selection.
    • Successful submitters from the first selection round will then be asked to submit a conference paper of up to 4,000 words by 15th September 2025.
    • Then successful conference applicants will be notified on 31st January 2026, with their final papers to be submitted by 31st March 2026.

As urban mobility evolves due to technological advances, economic changes and growing environmental concerns, the ERTRACALICE, and ERRAC Urban Mobility Working Group began updating the roadmap in mid-2023. This update outlines a comprehensive vision for optimising urban transport systems and paving the way towards a more sustainable future.

The 2024 version serves as a crucial guide for identifying key research and innovation opportunities. Drawing on expertise from industry professionals, stakeholders and previous working group publications, it reflects the latest developments in urban mobility, including research projects funded by Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe.

The roadmap prioritises making urban transport systems more convenient, accessible, affordable and resource-efficient for both passengers and goods. It covers every aspect of the transport network, from users and infrastructure to governance, while addressing connections between urban, peri-urban and rural areas.

One key focus is balancing growing mobility demands with limited urban space, promoting stronger integration between transport and city planning. The roadmap advocates sustainable solutions, emphasising active transport, public transit and shared mobility. By assessing current trends and future needs, the 2024 version provides a clear path for innovation and research to build a more efficient and sustainable transport system.

  3. LEVA-EU contributes to ERTRAC’s LEV paper on urban mobility

Comments Off on LEVA-EU contributes to ERTRAC’s LEV paper on urban mobility

The European Road Transport Research Advisory Council (ERTRAC) has announced the release of two urban mobility papers that give interesting insights on LEVs and the 15 Minute City concept.

    LEVs in urban mobility

ERTRAC’s work dives into the Light Electric Vehicle (LEV) world, focusing on the challenges and opportunities that arise from its integration into urban mobility. The paper provides an extensive snapshot of ongoing conversations within its community (which includes LEVA-EU) and advises on infrastructure requirements, safety protocols, environmental issues, and research priorities for the future.

Urban mobility and the 15 Minute City concept

This paper looks at this concept that revolves around city residents being able to access all their lifestyle essentials at distances that take them no longer than 15 minutes by bicycle or foot. It delivers insights and future routes for urban mobility, with real-world examples, and outlines how the 15 Minute Concept can potentially be achieved.

  4. The Urban Electric Mobility Initiative (UEMI) and the urban mobility SOLUTIONS network are calling for cities from Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America to become involved as leading city, take-up city or training participants

The SOLUTIONS network and the UEMI are looking for take-up cities to work together on the implementation of sustainable urban mobility measures. This is part of a new partnership with the European Road Transport Research Advisory Council (ERTRAC) and the European Green Vehicles Initiative (EGVI) as part of the EU-funded project FUTURE-RADAR.

As part of an effort to deliver on the New Urban Agenda the team invites cities to help assessing the opportunities for sustainable mobility concepts in their wider context of sustainable urban development. The mission of the SOLUTIONS and UEMI partnerships is to support the take-up of sustainable urban mobility solutions in cities across the world and foster the integration of urban electric mobility solutions into sustainable transport strategies.
    Join the global effort !

A wide range of cities will be involved throughout the different project phases. The focus will predominantly be on ‘second-tier’ cities, rather than mega-cities. The regions targeted represent different levels of maturity in terms of experience with sustainable urban mobility related actions. This will be addressed by adopting different approaches for these regions. Cities, as well as local and national officials can now apply to become involved in the UEMI and the SOLUTIONS network for one of the different city categories.
