THEO is the name given to a self-driving robot delivery method, or ‘bot-as-a-service trike’, that operates on the bicycle path.

The vehicle was developed in Germany and during testing has delivered its test orders to a closed university site. THEO is primarily designed to undertake fast, same-day delivery of goods and last-mile deliveries by logistics companies.

The robot’s maximum speed is 20 km/h, with a trolley that can carry a maximum of 100 kg, in 8 individual compartments. THEO is 70 cm wide and 168 cm long.

The designers describe THEO as a semi-autonomous trike, optimized for cycle paths. Semi-automatic means that THEO’s actions are monitored from a central control room. “If cycle paths are not available, [the robot] is also fast, light and agile enough to drive on conventional car lanes without causing congestion.”

THEO is registered with Mobilitylab, a partnership between several provinces to get startup pilots off the ground in the field of mobility. The intention is that these startups will test their innovative solution in the regions of Rotterdam, Noord-Brabant, Limburg or Utrecht.

LEVA-EU member Carla Cargo’s trailer was identified as a particularly logistically capable winner, alongside cargobikes from Vowag and Chike e-Cargo.

The second Cargobike of the Year Awards were recently presented by HUSS-VERLAG at the 2nd National Bike Logistics Conference in Frankfurt am Main. The industry has seen a major surge over the last two years, particularly in professionalization and innovation, with a flood of registrations for this year’s awards. Johannes Reichel, Ceremony Chairman, noted in particular the increasing focus within the cargobike industry, with providers homing in on either the B2B or B2C market; after all, “there is simply no such thing as [one] cargobike for everything”.

Entered designs were subject to extensive tests throughout the Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences campus, winning vehicles were distinguished by the fact that they took a big step forward and covered a wide range of applications. LEVA-EU member Carla Cargo took home the award for Best Cargo Bike Trailer, with the jury emphasising the trailer’s enormous amount of freight potential with little effort at a relatively low price.

    Congratulations Carla Cargo!

  4. Carla Cargo News: Final Update of 2019

2019 was a successful and demanding year for LEVA-EU member Carla Cargo. Even faster than expected they had to scale up production to keep up with the growing demand for their trailers. Another major result is the cooperation with Amazon in New York City. Several hundreds of their cargo trailers, called Carla’s, are now being used by an organic supermarket to supply citizens of New York with organic food.

The Carla’s will not only deliver food but are part of a bigger movement within the big Apple. The city council wants to reduce the numbers of delivery trucks, because of congestion and pollution, especially in densely populated areas such as Manhattan. Cargo bikes and trailers are smaller in size and have a lower environmental impact than trucks. Find out more about the role of Carla Cargo’s trailers in New York in an article of the New York Times

Carla Cargo has recently expanded their dealer network to three major European cities: Amsterdam, Heidelberg and Paris. So you know where to head if you want to test a new Carla can be done here!
