Bologna authorities aim to implement new traffic scheme by 2024

Bologna Città 30 is the Italian city’s new traffic plan, which aims to make its streets calmer, safer and more liveable by next year. The name derives from the maximum speed limit of 30 km/h that will be enforced throughout the city, making Bologna the largest city in Italy to implement such a speed restriction.

The groundwork has already been laid down with the existing 30 km/h limit currently covering a third of Bologna’s urban road network. The Bologna Città 30 scheme will expand this coverage to include 90% of its most densely populated areas.

How Bologna’s new initiative will be implemented

Implementing a city-wide speed limit requires a gradual change in habits and a shift in cultural norms, so authorities have introduced a 6-month grace period before enforcing any sanctions. During this time, an extensive awareness campaign will be conducted to educate and inform citizens about the advantages and importance of adhering to speed restrictions. Local police will also contribute with plans to increase awareness and ensure a smooth transition.

From July to September, the Sustainable Mobility Sector will begin installing over 500 vertical signs and painting more than 300 road surface signs to help the city prepare for Bologna Città 30. Strategic placement of signs and road markings will play a crucial role in effectively communicating new speed regulations to road users by improving driver understanding and compliance.
