Guide 17, a key document from CEN and CENELEC, aims to increase awareness for critical issues that are important to SMEs in the development of standards.
In recognition of World Standards Day on October 14, 2024, European standardisation committees CEN and CENELEC, and SBS – the European association representing SMEs in standardisation – released a video aimed at encouraging SME participation in the development of standards by promoting the use of Guide 17.
Guide 17 outlines several approaches to ensure SME needs are considered throughout the standardisation process, including:
Information on preparing new projects.
Points to consider when drafting standards.
Guidance for content development.
Recommendations for structuring and presenting content.
Insights on the implications of standards.
A final checklist to help standard writers address SME-specific needs.
To enhance accessibility, Guide 17 is available in multiple languages for free on the CEN and CENELEC website.
Additionally, a webinar will be held on November 29, 2024, organised by Small Business Standards alongside CEN and CENELEC, to discuss how Guide 17 supports SME-focused standards. This event will cover essential aspects of the guide, its significance in broader standard adoption, and the benefits of SME-friendly standards for all businesses. More details are available here.
A webinar series presented by Small Business Standards (SBS) and SME United is designed to help small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) master standardisation
Standardisation is crucial in enabling industries and stakeholders to agree on technical specifications, ensuring interoperability and consistency across sectors. The development of common European standards, as well as the removal of conflicting national standards, has been instrumental in creating a unified European Single Market.
For SMEs, standards are essential in improving product quality, increasing efficiency, ensuring regulation compliance, and easing access to European and international markets. A webinar series hosted by SBS and SME United aims to bridge the knowledge gap among SMEs around standardisation, by offering valuable insights to SME associations, and empowering them in supporting their members.
In the series, SBS and SME United will cover various aspects of standardisation in short live webinars, where participants will be able to ask questions and receive practical advice.
The upcoming webinar sessions are as follows:
Standards and Regulations: Navigating the Compliance maze 23 October 2024 | 14 – 14.45 CEST
An exploration of the relationship between standards, regulations, and conformity assessment. Discover how voluntary standards interact with mandatory regulations and the legal framework governing these areas. This session is essential to understand how SMEs can use standards to ensure compliance, minimise risks, and understand the legal landscape in which they operate.
Creating standards: Understanding the process 27 November 2024 | 14 – 14.45 CEST
Have you ever wondered how a standard is developed? This session will take you behind the scenes of the standardisation process and will take place during Meeting Standards week. Discover the stages of developing a standard, from the initial proposal to the final publication. Learn about the key players involved, including Technical Committees and Working Groups. This session will provide attendees with a clear picture of how standards come to life and the critical roles they can play in shaping them.
Get involved: Shaping standards to the benefit of SMEs 18 December 2024 | 14 – 14.45 CEST
SMEs have a unique opportunity to influence the standards that impact their industries. This session will explore how SMEs can engage in the standardisation process, with discussions around the benefits of involvement, best practices insights from successful SME representatives, and practical tips on where to find information and how to get started.

Comments Off on fka and TRL publish webinar on the future of EU micromobility technical regulations
The online event was a successful stakeholder launch of a project being conducted by TRL and fka on behalf of the European Commission on future regulations for micromobility in the EU
Lead by Dr Ianto Guy, Practice Lead at TRL, and attended by Annick Roetynck, Manager of LEVA-EU, the online webinar discussed harmonised rules to support the rise of micromobility and increased road safety for personal mobility devices. Lasting approximately 1.5 hours, the webinar included a fruitful QnA session.
TRL is a global centre for innovation in surface transport and mobility, with a focus on creating clean and efficient transport that is safe, reliable and accessible for everyone. The Germany-based fka is a research partner for the automotive industry, developing innovative solutions and strategic consulting.
The presentation includes a call for assistance, where TRL is very keen to hear from stakeholders who can help with following:
▪ Market data ▪ Evidence on the ways in which a lack of harmonised regulations is affecting the micromobility industry ▪ Collision data – particularly, detailed accounts of collision mechanisms ▪ Suggestions and feedback on cutoff limits for micromobility (30km/h, 250kg ??) – do we need to include factors other than mass and speed? ▪ Suggestions and feedback on technical requirements ▪ Suggestions and feedback on a pragmatic but effective system for self-certification which enables easy enforcement? ▪ Potential unintended consequences
