    The LEVA-EU member has been participating in three-wheeled bicycle testing events across the Netherlands, organised by Fietsersbond. The Tricycle Discovery days give the opportunity for people to experience Nijland tricycles and get expert advice, to help evaluate how their lifestyles can be empowered with practical, safe and enjoyable riding experiences.

    Dutch company, Nijland, has been innovating specialised bicycles for a range of rider scenarios for many years. Its tricycles provide extra stability and comfort to build confidence among riders of varying ages.

    The brand’s participation at Fietserbond events offers attendees the opportunity to discover which tricycle best suits their needs with free testing and expert advice from the Nijland team.

    It recently reported its latest event in the Diekmanhal in Enschede as a great success, and will be participating at numerous events around the Netherlands until October.

    The LEVA-EU member’s recumbent Easy Rider Explore and city cruiser Thuja models were put to the test by German electric cycling publication ElektroRad, in its annual E-bike Test, achieving assessments of Very Good and Good respectively.

    The ElektroRad testing procedure is thorough, following a complex evaluation system which comprises more than 120 test parameters. Both Easy Rider Explore and Thuja were tested in the Specialty models section of the Trekking Bikes section, which included three-wheeled variants.

    Easy Rider Explore

    This recumbent trike is described by the ElektrodRad tester as “a comfortable e-recumbent bike, well-suited for everyday use as well as touring.”

    The tester found the riding experience to be comfortable, thanks to features such as spring suspension on the rear axle, a seat with a backrest, and a very relaxed riding position. The drivetrain is noted for the silence of the hub motor, which provides three assistance levels enabling easy tackling of hill starts, and generously spaced 11 gears.

    The tester also encountered ice on the testing path, and found that the Easy Rider Explore felt secure in these conditions, concluding that the trike is “perfect for less confident cyclists and novices.”

    Thuja

    The tester states that the Thuja “offers maximum comfort and versatility, making it suitable for touring, commuting, and cargo.”

    Its innovative design is highlighted by the Ackermann steering system, which enables stable, easy manoeuvring, as each wheel turns at a different angle when cornering. Comfort is also prioritised, with a low step-through frame and upright seating position, which enables good visibility of traffic.

    The Thuja is powered by a vanRaam mid-drive motor that offers maximum torque of 75 Nm, and is paired with a continuously variable Enviolo hub.

    LEVA-EU member Rad Power Bikes welcomed the first electric tricycle in its lineup. An iconic adult tricycle with an impressive weight load capacity (188 kg/ 415 lbs), unmistakable Rad fat tires, and an impressive low step-in frame.

    The RadTrike 1 will be exclusively available in the USA in 2023 and may make an appearance in Europe and the UK in 2024 depending on interest from local Rad Communities.

    While this electric tricycle is not yet available in Europe, let’s take a look at what would be the same across the USA and European models:

    • Impressive weight load capacity of 188 kg (415 lbs) with a limit of 147kg (325 lbs) max rider weight
    • Extremely low step-in height (stand-over height) of 34 cm (13.4”)
    • This adult tricycle fits riders with heights of 163 – 185 cm (or inseam measurements between 25-35 inches)
    • Estimated reach on a full battery between 32-88 km (20-55 miles)

    So what would be different in Europe from the US model:

    • The European model will be equipped with a 250W motor to adhere to EU regulations (unlike the US model, which comes with a 750W motor)
    • The RadTrike 1 in Europe will be a pedelec trike. This means it will not be equipped with a half-twist throttle (unlike the US Rad ebikes); instead it will come with a Twist Power Assist to help you get launched with the bike. The Twist Power Assist will provide acceleration up to 6 km/hrs but will not provide additional speed without the rider pedaling the bike.
