The Founder and CEO of LEVA-EU member Micro, Wim Ouboter, is interviewed by Entrepreneur Mirror about his perspective on what’s next for compact mobility as he questions why single-occupancy commuters require large SUVs for short commuting trips. He also reflects on his unconventional beginnings and breakthrough milestones.
Ouboter stated that due to his dyslexia, he found education difficult, but had a “vision to see things others could not see”. His trailblazing vision of urban mobility began in 1997, when he developed and tested a prototype for months, which eventually became the foldable scooter that launched in Europe and USA, redefining a new movement in urban transportation.
He described a milestone moment when his vision became a global revolution:
“In 1999 we went up from 500 workers to 15,000 workers in China to produce in three factories my idea of the Kickboard and the Micro Scooter. Seeing this volume with 80,000 Micro Scooters leaving every day the factory for the world was incredible.”
The future of urban mobility
When questioned about his perspective on the latest technologies or shifts that he expected to change in the industry, Ouboter stated:
“New mindset to think smaller. Microlino is the perfect product for downsizing and not using an SUV for every short trip with one person inside. We also call this the next ‘Tesla’ when it will come to disruption and market potential.”
In the interview Ouboter proudly reflected on the evolution of diversifying Micro’s products across various compact mobility solutions, from scooters, to kickboards to electric microcars.
“If you look into our Micro Brand Book, you will see our wide innovation for products. Now we concentrate on the Microlino in different varieties.”
The full interview can be accessed on the Entrepreneur Mirror website.
For the first time, the LEVA-EU member took part in this sporting race, driving thousands of kilometres from Morocco, through the Atlas Mountains and rocky desert terrain, to the edge of the Sahara. The expedition successfully demonstrated the powers of its Microlino in providing high-performance, versatile and sustainable travel.
The RIVE Maroc international electric vehicle rally supports local schools, encourages charging infrastructure expansion and brings locals and visitors together in embracing electric mobility.
Two Microlino light electric vehicles took part in RIVE Maroc 2025, as Microlino Pioneers; they were visually customised to represent their race participation. They were driven by Wolfgang Jenne and Martin Muehlberg in the race that involved a range of electric vehicles, including electric motorcycles and cars. The RIVE route included mountain passes of up to 2,260 metres, narrow valleys and dusty tracks before it ended in the dunes of the Sahara desert.
“The real appeal was not the rally itself, but the question of whether we could truly do all of this with a Microlino. That is what turned it into a real adventure for me,” said Martin.
The Microlino experience at RIVE Maroc 2025
There was ample preparation for both light electric vehicles, including additional fans for improved charging performance, spare parts, a diagnostic laptop, a DC converter, a replacement display and a spare wheel.
On day one, the Microlinos crossed the Atlas Mountains in Morocco and drew crowds of children from local schools, who enthusiastically compared the microcars with the other larger models.
For charging, both drivers had to improvise by topping up the Microlinos, wherever they could find electricity along the route, whether it was a garden shed, at a fuel station, or in an office, workshop, hotel room or tent.
When the drivers entered the Sahara, they did find travelling through the fine sand challenging, but stated that it made the trip so rewarding alongside the area’s tranquillity and vast landscape.
Although RIVE Maroc 2025 had high demands, both Microlinos had hardly any problems, with no serious damage or error messages. Their ground clearance appeared to be better than expected, with impressive robustness, and energy consumption was very low in some cases.
From the trip, both Martin and Wolfgang noticed that locals were very intrigued by the Microlino city microcars and demonstrated openness towards electric mobility:
“I was surprised by how open people in Morocco are towards electric mobility. There were practically only positive reactions. Progress is welcomed there, while at home you often still have to explain why e-mobility makes sense,” said Wolfgang.
Long distances covered by the Microlinos
Wolfang covered approximately 6,100 kilometres in his Microlino, as he drove it from Switzerland, all through Western Europe to get to Morocco. Martin drove 2,100 kilometres in the Microlino during the race, having travelled 4,500 kilometres through Europe to get to RIVE Maroc with a transporter that carried the compact vehicle with other essential equipment.
Looking ahead
Both drivers have said they may consider taking part in the RIVE Maroc again. Wolfgang has even thought about participating next in the RIVE eDakar, a race of 2,400 kilometres, with its route starting from Agadir in Morocco to Dakar in Senegal.
And as for the light electric vehicle brand, it has described its participation in the RIVE Maroc as a special milestone that symbolises what the company stands for in representing “courage, determination, a spirit of adventure and the conviction that micromobility can achieve far more than many people might think.”

Comments Off on From E-Mobility to Combustion: Microlino’s Groundbreaking Transition
In an unexpected twist of events that’s set to shake the foundations of the car industry and perhaps, ignite a spark in the hearts of policymakers across Europe, Microlino has announced a revolutionary change in its production line. Buckling under the pressure of unsupported L7e electric vehicle infrastructure and burgeoning import taxes, the beloved compact EV maker is taking a bold leap – back in time.
From Electric Dreams to Combustion Realities
Yes, you read that right. In a move that’s bound to raise more than a few eyebrows, Microlino is saying goodbye to its electric dreams and embracing the age-old combustion engine. “Given the lack of government support in various European countries and the imposition of import taxes, we’ve been pushed to rethink our strategy,” explains Wim Ouboter, CEO & Founder of Micro. “Moreover, being part of the L7e category, which sadly doesn’t play a role in the CO2 calculations, denies us the benefits that giants like Tesla enjoyed in the past, reaping 700 million from the government annually.”
Innovative Partnership: The New Engine from India
In an exciting development, Microlino announces that the origin of the new combustion engine will be India – a country globally recognized for its expertise in manufacturing high-quality and premium motorcycles. “For our latest step, we have entered into a partnership with one of the leading experts in the motorcycle industry. This collaboration symbolizes our continuous pursuit of innovation and the highest quality, even as we venture into the realm of combustion engines.” With this move, Microlino underscores its commitment to excellence and the willingness to explore unconventional paths to find the best solutions.
A Nostalgic Solution to Modern Problems
The decision, which comes after much deliberation and a hint of desperation, is seen as a pragmatic step back to a time when combustion was king. “It’s simple, really,” continues Ouboter. “If the world doesn’t support our electric ambitions, we’ll save costs where it hurts the most – the battery.” This drastic shift not only highlights the financial and regulatory challenges faced by electric microcars but also shines a spotlight on the broader issue of electric vehicle support in Europe. “Our move to combustion is a cheeky nod to the political sarcasm that surrounds the L7e vehicle category in most European countries. A lack of support? Fine, we’ll just save the planet the old-fashioned way.”
