The European Green Deal covers sustainability targets for energy, transport, agriculture, material usage and the built environment, and the EIT Climate-KIC, the Club of Rome and Metabolic emphasize that it needs to be implemented urgently to help the European Union be the first “climate-neutral bloc” in the world by 2050 and tackle future pandemics, climate, and economic change. There are also calls for an urgent appointment of a Climate Action Commissioner and Vice President for the cause.
As it stands, demands for the European Green Deal to be implemented as a priority have received signatures from over 250 policy makers, researchers, businesses and NGO organisation leaders.
CEO of EIT Climate, Kirsten Dunlop has addressed the effects of climate change and global uncertainty in her calls for EU members to action the European Green Deal urgently, “Extreme heatwaves in Europe, India the US and across the world are here, and look at what is happening: significant mortality, economic losses, and environmental degradation. Drought and wildfires, violent rain, floods and intensified hurricanes and cyclones; if not one, the other. Climate change is upon us. So is social and political change. We need to implement the changes we need and build on them. It is possible for us to change. It is urgent. It will bring hope and opportunity. But we need a durable political foundation and a fresh narrative that embraces a systems approach and aligns with the evolving priorities of climate action, security, economic stability, and social well-being, that resonates with Europeans,”.
