Basque brand Abums’ electric mountain bike has made the news in Spain, with its debut model, the Model One, believed to be the first known steel-frame e-MTB to incorporate a fully integrated battery. LEVA-EU member MAHLE’s 800 Wh battery powers the bike – one of the first models to use the MAHLE M40 full power mid-drive system, which delivers intuitive, controlled performance on any terrain.
The new handcrafted electric mountain bike from Basque manufacturer Abums is drawing industry attention for its steel construction, integrated battery system, and early adoption of MAHLE’s latest mid-drive motor technology. The company’s debut model, the Model One, stands out as the first known steel-frame e-MTB to incorporate a fully integrated battery – an approach that contrasts sharply with the external battery solutions typically used in steel builds.
Developed by a team of three engineers and an industrial designer, the Model One combines traditional craftsmanship with advanced performance features. Central to the bike’s capabilities is the recently released MAHLE M40 mid-drive motor, a high-torque system offering up to 105 Nm and 850 W peak power. Abums is among the first brands to implement the M40, paired with MAHLE’s 800 Wh battery, which is seamlessly housed within the frame’s downtube. The bike also incorporates high-pivot rear suspension, long-travel enduro geometry, and a mullet wheel setup, underscoring its premium, performance-oriented design. With limited, made-to-order production and pricing from €11,900, the Model One positions Abums as a niche yet innovative entrant in the evolving e-MTB market.
