E-bike brand shares feedback from market surveillance investigation team

Source: Cycling Industry News

Wisper has told UK media CIN that the DVSA (Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency) has investigated them as part of their work to improve the safety of the e-bike market in the UK with a crackdown on illegal e-bikes.

The DVSA has stated that it is satisfied with Wisper’s operations, however, there have been indications of a wider investigation into the UK e-bike market with some of Wisper’s bike retailers informing the brand that they have also been looked at by the DVSA.

Wisper sent a letter to its dealers with an update on DVSA’s investigation:“Earlier this week we and two Wisper main dealers were contacted by the DVSA Market Surveillance Investigations Team regarding our full-throttle bikes as part of a wider crackdown on illegal eBikes entering the UK market. After a short but thorough investigation of our processes, we are very pleased to say that the DVSA were satisfied with the way we operate and were in fact very encouraging, praising us for the way we were administering the scheme.

Wisper also passed on one recommendation made by the DVSA to its dealers to increase customer awareness about e-bike legality:

Whilst I am more than happy with the way Wisper operates in having full throttle bikes approved and the information that is provided on the Wisper website, some of the Wisper retailers don’t seem to be providing the same amount of information to their customers. The concern is that customers may not be aware of the legalities around full throttle ebikes, and they just expect to purchase one with the throttle enabled (Wisper bike or another brand).”
