    Solarcycle Ltd has implemented a high-performing, free-to-use e-bike charging unit in one of the most remote locations in the UK, demonstrating how renewable energy can empower sustainable mobility in the scenic Scottish eco-tourism destination.

    The charging unit has been installed as a sustainable mobility hub at the Community and Visitor Centre at the Isle of Arran, one of the UK’s most environmentally significant tourism destinations which is situated off the west coast of Scotland.

    Visitors from the UK and beyond visit the island to explore its rugged landscapes, coastal routes, natural heritage and partake in various outdoor activities. As visitor numbers continue to grow, the island faces increasing pressure to provide transport solutions that reduce reliance on private vehicles while protecting its natural environment.

    Solarcycle’s new charging station enables both residents and visitors to recharge e-bikes using on-site renewable energy, encouraging low-impact travel and supporting more sustainable tourism across the island.

    Highest-performing installation to date

    According to Solarcycle, installation at Arran has become the company’s highest-performing deployment to date. Its integrated solar panels consistently generate more energy than is required to meet charging demand, demonstrating the viability of renewable-powered charging infrastructure, even in remote locations.

    The project provides evidence that solar-powered mobility solutions can operate effectively in challenging environments while reducing dependence on conventional electrical infrastructure.

    Data-driven approach to support future infrastructure planning

    As well as providing charging facilities, the installation contributes to Solarcycle’s growing network of smart infrastructure, collecting anonymous usage data to help better understand e-bike charging behaviour by developing predictive insights that support future infrastructure planning.

    These insights are intended to help destinations, employers, healthcare organisations and visitor attractions identify where charging facilities are most needed and optimise future investment in cycling infrastructure.

    Paul Stratford, CEO of Solarcycle, explains how the value of the technology extends beyond simply providing power.

    “Charging infrastructure is only one part of the equation. The real value comes from understanding user behaviour. Every installation helps us build a clearer picture of how people use e-bikes in different environments, enabling us to advise organisations on demand, location suitability and future investment decisions.”

    Standalone solar-powered design for rapid deployment

    The Isle of Arran project also demonstrates the practical advantages of Solarcycle’s modular charging system.

    Unlike traditional charging infrastructure, the units require no trenching, extensive groundwork or major construction works. This enables installations to be completed quickly while minimising disruption to surrounding landscapes, making the technology particularly well suited to rural communities, protected environments and visitor attractions.

    The charging system can also be retrofitted to existing cycle shelters, allowing organisations to enhance existing cycling facilities without replacing infrastructure or undertaking significant redevelopment.

    Its standalone solar-powered design removes the need for nearby buildings or electrical connections, providing greater flexibility when selecting installation sites.

    Supporting sustainable tourism in the UK

    The Arran installation is part of Solarcycle’s broader programme to expand renewable-powered e-bike charging infrastructure across the UK.

    The company has completed installations in a variety of rural and visitor destinations, including Denbies Wine Estate in the South Downs, where a public charging station has been introduced to encourage visitors to explore the surrounding countryside by bicycle.
