The 16th ITS European Conference will take place in Seville from 19 to 21 May, 2025.  Organised by the public-private partnership organisation ERTICO – ITS Europe, the conference aims to bring together industry leaders, policymakers, and innovators to explore the future of urban mobility under the central theme ‘Clean, Resilient, and Connected Mobility’.

The focus on clean mobility, according to ERTICO – ITS Europe CEO Joost Vantomme, is about reducing emissions and integrating greener transport solutions such as shared mobility services: “The shift to clean transport isn’t just about electric vehicles, it’s about rethinking the entire ecosystem. This includes integrating renewable energy into transport networks, optimising traffic flows to cut emissions, and encouraging multimodal transport.”

Resilience is the transport network’s ability to withstand disruption from various directions, whether extreme weather, cyber threats, or unexpected events. “Urban transport must be prepared for shocks,” says Vantomme. “Cities need digital tools, predictive analytics, and integrated emergency response systems to keep people moving, even in the face of disruptions.”

Connected mobility is the real-time interconnectedness of multiple transport modes in a modern transport system, enabling enhanced efficiency and safety for individual journeys. “We are entering an era where AI-powered mobility solutions can dynamically respond to real-time conditions. The aim is to make transport not just smarter but also more user-centric, ensuring that people can move through cities with greater ease and reliability.”

    Why Seville?

Seville has blossomed in terms of sustainable urban mobility, becoming a model for other European cities aiming for climate neutrality. It is one of the European Commission’s 100 Mission Cities, committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2030.

“Seville is a standout city for public and private transport, as well as intelligent transport systems,” says Vantomme. “It’s not just about cars, roads, and rail, it’s about integrating innovation, data exchange, and cloud computing into transport systems.”

The city has made significant progress in promoting cycling as a real alternative to travel by car, with the SEVici shared bicycle system boasting 2,500 bikes over 263 stations and supporting 70,000 daily trips, on an enhanced 180km of protected bike lanes – compared to only 12km in 2006.

Other highlights include the low-emission district eCitySevilla, an initiative which brings together EV infrastucture, real-time energy monitoring, and cooling systems such as the CartujaQanat project, which combat the city’s high summer temperatures through a combination of ancient water-management techniques with modern technology.

Digital transport innovation, such as the MathIT.MOTUS app, developed for the PCT Cartuja district, uses real-time data to optimise traffic flow and reduce congestion.
