Bicycle sector sees inevitable price increases, with e-bikes particularly affected

The ripple effects of international tensions are affecting the bicycle industry, with price rises unavoidably being passed onto consumers. E-bikes especially are vulnerable to inevitable price increases associated with the production and supply of essential electronic components.

Cycling media Nieuwsfiets reports that raw materials are becoming more expensive, suppliers are introducing energy and transport surcharges, and bike industry margins are facing continued pressure, with the effects being felt throughout the whole chain from producer to end-user.

Transport by both sea and road is subject to significantly higher rates from transporters, which naturally has repercussions for the bike industry with its high reliance on international supply. Additionally, producers of essential bicycle materials – aluminium, steel, rubber and plastics – are also raising prices, due to a combination of rising energy and material costs and increasingly expensive transport containers.

As a result, distributors and manufacturers are tending to introduce variable energy or transport surcharges of their own.

E-bikes are particularly susceptible to increasing prices, as the production of key components including batteries, motors and electronic components need a lot of energy, and rely on complex international supply chains.
