The City of Antwerp keeps parks and squares clean with LEVA-EU member EVPro’s Stuyf pickups.

After a successful test phase, the electric Stuyf pickup has become a permanent solution for the Antwerp City Cleaning Service to help keep public spaces clean. These silent, environmentally friendly vehicles that are driven while standing are 100% electric and offer an efficient and ergonomic solution for city employees. The EVPro Stuyf pickups are used to remove litter and empty waste bins in parks, shopping, and walking areas, and busy places.

These innovative vehicles offer numerous advantages. They improve the park experience for visitors because they are silent and thus maintain the peace and atmosphere in public areas. They are also efficient, as these electric handcarts can reach places that are more difficult to reach for larger vehicles. The use of these handcarts also avoids possible conflicts between vulnerable road users and larger collection vehicles in busy places.

Alderman for urban cleaning and waste, Ken Casier, stated: “As a city, we are committed to a smart greening of our urban cleaning vehicles. For example, we now have electric handcarts to keep our parks clean. Nice and quiet so that they do not disturb anyone and ergonomic for our highly valued employees. With the help of all residents and visitors who deposit waste correctly and with the extra manpower that we deploy during the ‘park season’, we can rightly say of every park: clean, huh!”

This success is part of a wider rollout of Stuyf pickups across Belgium. In addition to the fleet of 21 handcarts now in use in Antwerp, EVPro has vehicles in use in Bruges, Brussels, Schaerbeek, Ghent, and growing.

In addition to the rollout of electric trolleys, the city of Antwerp continues to focus on greening vehicles at the City Cleaning Department. Since the start of the park season, from April 1 to October 1, 45 additional staff members have been deployed to keep parks as clean as possible. The City of Antwerp continues to work towards a clean city, and calls on its residents and all visitors to dispose of waste correctly.

The government of Bruges has requested more micromobility vehicles from LEVA-EU member EVpro to improve its cleaning efforts sustainably.

Following recent announcements about EVpro deploying its Stuyf Pickups to Brussels and the municipality of Schaarbeek in Belgium, it has now sent seven more of its Stuyf Pickups to help the Stad Brugge government keep the historic city centre of Bruges clean, with the region now having nine units, including one that is equipped with a high-pressure cleaner.

    Bruges’ greening mobility efforts

In 2022, the city published an ambitious climate strategy for the next 30 years with aims to halve its CO2 emissions by 50% by 2030, including targets to make it a car-free, bicycle friendly city with initiatives including turning ninety of its streets into cycling zones and a subsidy encouraging families to ditch their cars.

With the expansion of its fleet in Bruges, EVpro reinforces its role as a key partner in the city’s transition toward cleaner, low-emission urban mobility.

The LEVA EU member has announced an extension of its greening mobility efforts in the Belgian capital.

The micromobility provider deployed eight of its electric Stuyf Pickups to Brussels’ Cleaning Department and Green Service, helping it to reduce its carbon footprint and allowing its service workers to carry out essential work efficiently.

This move follows on from the Belgian municipality of Schaerbeek also using Stuyf Pickups for its cleaning and green services.

    Brussels’ sustainability efforts

The city’s collaboration with EVpro is the latest in a whole host of sustainability plans that are being implemented in this region. In 2022, it published its sustainable mobility summary for the region with the STIB-MIVB, the Brussels Intercommunal Transport Company, intending to reduce its carbon emissions by 39% in 2030 compared to 2010.

It aims to do this by improving its public transport with the installation of 94 electric buses, 90 trams, 43 metro trains, and renewing 63 kilometres of track on existing tram and metro networks. More recently, in 2024, Brussels airport launched Belgium’s first autonomous shuttle for a sustainable mobility pilot.

By integrating EVpro’s Stuyf Pickups into its urban services, Brussels reinforces its commitment to cleaner mobility as it actions its plans in reaching its sustainable mobility targets.

EV Pro, LEVA-EU member and importer of the Stuyf range of small electric vehicles, has seen a healthy uptake during 2024.

EV Pro imports Stuyf (formerly Stint) small electric vehicles into Belgium from the Dutch company Mobilitum, and has seen a range of customers purchasing during 2024.

The CE Pick-Up model was the most popular, with local authorities leading the way. The City of Antwerp bought 20, and others including Bruges, Ghent, Schoten and Schaerbeek have also been won over by this small vehicle, which has a loading capacity of up to 300 kg and a range of 40-80 km, depending on needs and use. Customers for this vehicle also include inter-municipal companies (Tibi in Charleroi), schools (HoGent), hospitals and a company by the name of Manus, which uses three of them.

The CE Cargo version, which has a closed loading space and a loading capacity of 280 kg, can now be used as a means of transport, allowing it be driven (at a maximum speed of 17.2 km/h) without a helmet and without registration, with insurance now being covered by the user’s liability insurance.
