Acute Ambulance & Medical Services (AAMS), a medical response provider, will deploy a fleet of electric bicycle ambulances at the London Winter Run next month, marking a first for official medical provision at a large-scale UK sporting event. The initiative represents a new approach to emergency response in crowded environments, where traditional ambulances and motorcycle units may face access limitations.
The e-bike ambulances are designed to navigate dense crowds and confined spaces more effectively than conventional vehicles. They will provide rapid medical assistance to runners and spectators experiencing exhaustion, dehydration, injuries, or other medical episodes. AAMS says the bikes’ manoeuvrability can significantly reduce delays that traditional ambulances or motorcycles might encounter in high-attendance events.
A sustainable and practical alternative
While motorcycles have long been used for event medical response, AAMS noted that electric bicycles have not previously been deployed in an official ambulance capacity at sporting events. The e-bike ambulances offer zero-emission operation, reduced noise, and increased agility. They combine sustainability with practicality, allowing medics to carry essential medical equipment without compromising mobility.
Fully equipped for on-site care
Each e-bike ambulance is outfitted to handle most medical emergencies. Equipment includes full first-aid and trauma kits, automated external defibrillators (AEDs), airway management tools, bleeding control equipment, communication radios, and high-visibility safety lighting. This setup allows clinicians to provide immediate care on-site and stabilise patients until further treatment or transfer to a traditional ambulance is necessary.
Trial success could expand use
The London Winter Run deployment follows a successful pilot at the Milton Keynes Winter Half Marathon in December 2025. AAMS has indicated that, if the programme proves effective, it could be extended to other large-scale sporting events, festivals, urban gatherings, and public activities in the UK and internationally. The London Winter Run is the UK’s largest 10k run event, organised by Cancer Research UK.
Kieren Gibson, Director of AAMS, said, “We are redefining what responsive, clean and safe event medical support looks like. Big sporting events require rapid, flexible emergency response, and these bikes allow our team to reach patients faster, more safely, and more sustainably than ever before.”
A step toward low-emission emergency response
The trial reflects a growing interest in low-emission solutions for public services. By combining speed, accessibility, and environmental benefits, e-bike ambulances may redefine how medical support is delivered in high-density, complex environments, potentially shaping the future of event-based emergency care.
