Mechatronics Engineer, VROEGH – Utrecht (NL)
VROEGH’s Core Mission
At VD our mission is to elevate urban life by designing intelligent, human-centred mobility solutions that make cities more liveable, while providing users with freedom and convenience.
Urban mobility isn’t just about getting from A to B, it’s about designing experiences. From sleek urban vehicles to robust cargo solutions, from sharing scooters to lifestyle bicycles, we craft designs that transform the way people navigate their urban world. Mobility isn’t just functional, it’s an opportunity to shape the future of city life.
About the Role
We’re redesigning urban freedom with a new form factor of autonomous mobility: the light urban vehicle (“LUV”). It combines the freedom of bike lanes, the safety and comfort of a car, and self-parking capabilities. Our technology bridges hardware and autonomy, enabling advanced safety and autonomous driving features. The development of the LUV tightly integrates mechanics, electronics, and software.
As our Mechatronics Engineer, you will work at the core of this integration. You will take a leading role in ensuring that mechanical systems, electronics, and embedded software function together as one cohesive vehicle platform, in close cooperation with our client’s System Architect and Embedded Engineers.
In our small team, currently consisting of mechanical & industrial engineers and designers, you will act as a key technical connector, translating system-level requirements into well-integrated, reliable solutions that can be prototyped, tested, and scaled toward production.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and integrate mechatronic systems across the vehicle
- Bridge mechanical design, electronics, and embedded software to ensure system-level coherence
- Define system architectures and interfaces for sensors, actuators, control units, and power systems
- Support embedded firmware development and hardware integration in collaboration with software and electronics partners
- Work closely with mechanical engineers and designers on packaging, tolerances, routing, and manufacturability
- Participate in prototype build/assembly, bring-up, testing, debugging, and validation
- Contribute to component selection, system documentation, and technical decision-making
- Help establish engineering best practices for integration, testing, and reliability
Knowledge and Experience
- Strong background in mechatronics, robotics, or electromechanical system development
- Minimum of 3 years of experience working in the field of mechatronics
- Solid understanding of sensors, actuators, control systems, and electronics fundamentals
- Familiarity with real-time systems or vehicle communication protocols (e.g. CAN)
- Familiarity with embedded systems and low-level software (e.g. C/C++)
- Hands-on experience building, testing, and troubleshooting physical systems (HIL setups)
- Ability to communicate effectively across disciplines and translate requirements into system-level solutions
What Makes You Stand Out
- System-level thinking with the ability to connect mechanical, electrical, and software domains
- Experience with stabilisation technology (e.g. gyroscope)
- Comfortable taking technical ownership and driving decisions independently
- Practical, hands-on approach to development and problem-solving
- Strong collaboration and communication skills within a multidisciplinary team
- Motivation to build a real, production-ready mobility product in a startup environment
Cultural Fit and Motivation
- Attracted to early-stage innovation and tangible creation, not corporate structure.
- Hands-on mentality, present every day to contribute.
- Motivated by redefining urban mobility.
