The International Transport Forum (ITF) has launched the Safe System Tool, a platform designed to support road safety assessments and interventions. This tool enables stakeholders to evaluate and improve their strategies, projects, and plans in alignment with the Safe System approach to reduce road fatalities and serious injuries.
The Safe System approach is a framework for road safety that focuses on proactive, systemic measures to prevent severe crashes. It emphasizes shared responsibility among stakeholders to develop a road network that minimizes risks for all users. By accounting for human error, the approach aims to create systems that reduce the likelihood and severity of crashes.
The Safe System Tool provides a structured framework for assessing road safety policies, projects, and initiatives. It identifies areas for improvement and supports the selection of evidence-based interventions. By offering insights into existing strategies, the tool helps guide the development of targeted road safety measures.
“The Safe System Tool fosters the kind of co-ordinated action from all groups with a stake in safety and health that will drive down the unacceptably high number of traffic victims.” said ITF Secretary-General Young Tae Kim at its launch during the 4th Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety in Marrakech, Morocco. “Our roads will become safe only through collective effort”.
The tool is now available to road safety professionals and stakeholders working to implement the Safe System approach and improve road safety outcomes.
