The LEVA-EU member has joined forces with fellow LEVA-EU member CIXI to introduce smooth, chainless e-assist cycling that’s maintenance-free, thanks to CIXI’s PERS system.

British brand ICE Trikes has announced the arrival of its next generation of trikes, featuring CIXI’s game-changing technology which has been widely admired in the light electric vehicle industry.

How does it elevate riding experiences?

The PERS system is a mechanism that converts pedalling power into propulsion through electricity alone, enabling users to intuitively control speed and braking, therefore eliminating the need for chains and drivetrains in two-, three-, and four-wheeled vehicles. Its driving force is pedalling power, meaning that the more pedal-power the vehicle receives, the more speed it generates.

For users, ICE Trikes’ PERS-equipped models deliver exciting experiences that feel natural and intuitive. It simplifies riding by removing the need for gear shifting, while providing clean maintenance, reverse pedalling, regenerative braking, discreet operation, smartphone connectivity, and anti-theft technology.

It boasts a powerful 250W rear hub motor, a torque of 75nm, 5 power settings, and a 700 Wh battery, to enable smooth riding.

PERS Chainless System overview

The unique riding experience of the PERS Chainless e-assist pedalling system is available now for ICE Adventure, Adventure HD and Sprint X Tour trikes.

The PERS system, which delivers clean, chainless power, consists of a pedal generator at the front of each trike for converting pedalling into electric power. The generator transfers the electrical power through wires to its powerful 250W hub that’s positioned in the rear wheel, which is designed to deliver 75Nm of torque. Located under the trike seat is a 700 Wh battery for storing power.

ICE Trikes estimates the range of its models equipped with PERS chainless e-assist as being between 40-60 miles (64-96 km), depending on factors including riding conditions, temperature, tires, riding style, assist mode, and rider weight.

Flexible speed for various riding styles

The groundbreaking system provides natural pedalling resistance that instantly adapts to riding styles, enabling riders to pedal at their preferred rhythm, at any speed or incline. For example, to move faster, riders are simply required to pedal faster, which will make the system adapt to match their preferred pedalling speed.

Users have the option of selecting how much help and assistance the system gives them from five different power modes: Muscular, Active, Balanced, Punch, or Dynamite. They can receive up to a 400% power boost and can reach 0-20mph within 3 seconds in Dynamite mode.

Depending on regional regulations, it supports assist levels up to 25 km/h (15.5 mph) or 20 mph (32 km/h).

Pedal back braking and regenerative battery charging

When braking, the PERS system captures energy and stores it in the battery. To slow down, riders are required to pedal backwards when riding, which simultaneously uses the energy to charge the battery. This process of creating energy through braking can increase cycling range by up to 25%.

Reversing and navigating tight turns

From a stationary position, riders can make a tight turn or maneuver back and forth by simply pedalling backwards.

Maintenance-free for 50,000 km

ICE Trikes emphasises the cleanliness and easy maintenance the PERS-equipped trike models. As they are chainless, there is no need for sorting greasy parts and ongoing maintenance. The brand also promises that without chains, cassettes or transmissions, there’s no need to worry about replacements for the first 50,000 km.

Anti-theft and smart connected technology*

A large, clear controller comes with easy-to-use buttons for easy, controlled riding experiences.

Riders can secure and lock their system with a unique pin, which can also be enabled for locating the trike whenever and wherever, from the active pilot app*.

The PERS connectivity services enable trike control, the creation of digital keys, system updates, as well as provide other riding features such as innovative statistics.

*The Active Pilot App features will come shortly after launch. It has been speed tested to 20mph on a US spec system.
