A study by German sustainable transport and mobility research organisation, T3 Transportation Think Tank, shows that employees with company bikes cycle-commute more frequently, and that e-bikes play an important role in this increased frequency.

The study is based on an online survey of Germany’s working population in autumn 2023, with a sample size of 3,685. A clear correlation was found for commuting for those with a bike procured under a company scheme, with respondents more likely to cycle to work “occasionally or most of the time” compared to those without a company bike. The study highlights the large proportion of e-bikes in company fleets and also found that an e-bike is associated with more frequent cycling in everyday mobility scenarios as well as commuting.

The research was published in the journal Active Travel Studies. Lead author Janina Welsch emphasizes that the effect is particularly noticeable when commuting: “Our analysis shows that company bikes make a difference especially when commuting.”
